Where is the canal located?

Mid-Lakes Navigation operates canal boat charters on the waterways of the Erie Canal in the Finger Lakes region of Central New York.

When do I pick up the boat?

For the Lockmaster rentals, you may pick up your boat at 2 p.m. on the first day. It is due back on your final day by 9 a.m. For half week rentals the departure and return times will vary, please call for details.

How many people are allowed on the boat?

The canal boats are designed for smaller parties- the maximum on the Lockmaster 34 is 4 people, and the maximum for the Lockmaster 41 and 42 is 6 people.

How difficult is driving a canal boat?

Driving a canal boat t is different than driving a car, but is not that difficult. The marina staff will also walk you through driving the boat when you pick it up.  Most people get the hand of maneuvering the boat within a few minutes.

What is the billing schedule?

50% of your canal boat rental fee is required to reserve your trip.  The balance is due 60 days prior to your arrival. Once you arrive, an additional $500 security deposit is held until your boat is returned undamaged.

How do I check availability or reserve a canal boat?

Give us a call at 888-454-8825, and one of our reservation agents will be happy to check availability for you. It’s helpful if you already have an idea of when you want to go and what boat you’re most interested in when you call.

How early do I need to reserve?

 The earlier the better is a good rule to follow, particularly if you have an exact date in mind for your trip, or if you’re planning a trip over a holiday weekend.

However, if you’re flexible with your dates or the exact houseboat model, we can almost always find a trip for you even a few weeks before hand.

Are linens included with my canal boat t rental?

Linens are included on all of the canal boat rentals.

Are pets allowed on my canal boat?

Pets are not allowed on the canal boats except for one 34’ Lockmaster boat. Let your reservation agent know you are looking for the pet-friendly canal boat and they will be happy to check the availability for you.

How old do you have to be to rent the canal boats?

The renter needs to be 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license.

Do I need a license to operate the houseboats, or is a skipper provided?

There is no special license needed to operate our canal boats. There are rules for operating canal boats on the waterways, and we will explain them to you upon your arrival.

Will I get seasick on a canal boat?

The water is very calm and the current is controlled by locks. So, unless another boat puts out a wake, there is really not much to get sea sick over.

Where is the nearest grocery store so I can stock up for my trip?

There are many local grocery stores you will see on your way to Mid-Lakes Navigation. There are also some small stores conveniently located on the canal.

What is the best time of year to go visit the Erie Canal?

It is always a good time to visit! Summer is the most popular and is the busiest season. The boats are available to rent from early May through the middle of October.

Can I fish from the canal boat?

Yes! Fishing is a very popular activity. A fishing license is required. You may purchase them online or at a local sporting goods store.
