Sightseeing at Lake Oroville
On the lake:
- Lake Oroville Dam - 530-534-2306 - Tallest dam in the USA at 770 feet, and one of the largest earthen dams.
- Bidwell Bar Suspension Bridge - South end of the lake in Bidwell Canyon, 530-538-2219 - Built in 1856 it was California’s first suspension bridge. It has been closed to traffic since 1954.
- Lake Oroville Visitor’s Center - North end of Kelly Ridge Road, 530-538-2219 - Information on wildlife, history, brochures, and a 47-foot viewing tower.
- Lake Oroville State Recreation Area - Home to numerous campgrounds and beautiful scenery encompassing the entire lake.
In the area:
- Butte County Pioneer Memorial Museum - 2332 Montgomery Street, Oroville, 530-538-2497 - Built in 1932, the museum is a replica of a 49er cabin including antique furniture, clothing, and toys from the area and from the times, as well as Indian artifacts.
- C.F. Lott Home in Sank Park - 1067 Montgomery Street, Oroville, 530-538-2497 or 530-538-2415 - Tour a Victorian home built in 1856 with antique furnishings of the times.
- Oroville Chinese Temple & Garden - 1500 Broderick St., Oroville, 530-538-2496 - A Chinese temple for the worship of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism, built in 1863, with a garden for meditation and contemplation.
- Table Mountain - Take Table Mtn. Blvd. to Cherokee Rd. and continue to the top. In the springtime Table Mountain is ablaze with wildflowers and a popular place for kite-flying, you can also park your car and explore the area on foot as long as you wish, for which you will be rewarded with stirring sites including waterfalls.
- Feather River Canyon National Scenic Byway - A 130-mile drive starting in Oroville and continuing on Hwy 70 to Beldon Town - On the stretch you will encounter three tunnels, a steel arch bridge, wildflowers and waterfalls in the spring and fall leaves in the autumn, and there is a Railroad museum in Portola.
- Berry Creek - A small town just east of Oroville, it is known for its abundance of blackberries.
- Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park - 525 Esplanade, Chico, 530-895-6144 - Built in the 1800’s it was home to John Bidwell who struck gold near Oroville.
- Bidwell Park - 4th Street and Cypress Avenue, Chico, 530-896-7800 - After her husband’s death Annie Bidwell donated this park to the city. Now there are more than 3600 acres that offer a variety of activities such as: picnicking, swimming, horseback riding, biking, golfing, archery, shooting ranges, playgrounds, baseball fields, etc.
- Bidwell-Sac River State Park - 12105 River Road, Chico, 530-342-5185 - Enjoy rafting, canoeing, tubing, kayaking, fishing, bird and wildlife watching here.
