The Caloosahatchee River runs directly through Fort Myers.

To Sanibel from Fort Myers, Florida: Sanibel Island is about 24 miles from Fort Myers. To get there, take McGregor Boulevard seaward for 10 miles, at which point you'll need to take a right to stay on the boulevard. Continue on for 2.7 miles, then take another right to remain on the road. This section of the boulevard is a partial toll road. The road now becomes Causeway Boulevard. Continue on for 3.2 miles, then take a right on Periwinkle Way. After 2.4 miles, take a right at Palm Ridge Road and go for 0.4 miles, at which point the road will become Sanibel-Captiva Road. Continue for 2 miles, take a right at Wildlife Drive, take another, quick right to remain on Wildlife Drive and continue on the road as it becomes Memorial Wildlife Drive. You're on Sanibel Island.

To get to Captiva Island: Take Memorial Wildlife Drive south for 0.4 miles. It will become Wildlife Drive. You'll take a right on Sanibel-Captiva Road shortly afterward. Drive for 5.2 miles and the road will become Captiva Drive. Continue for 2.6 miles, and you're on Captiva Island.
