What is there to do at Sanibel and Captiva Islands? The Caloosahatchee River?
Upon reaching the Sanibel and Captiva Islands, you'll find them an island paradise - away from the press of the city without being isolated, wild without being lonely. Comb the beaches for shells, and few beaches have so many shells as these, watch for sea-birds or bike and hike along the marsh ways. You'll also find unique shops and restaurants, theater and golf and tennis courses. The fishing is excellent and you may want to explore the underwater landscape by scuba or snorkel.
The Caloosahatchee River is the site of many marinas that ship out to the two islands. Wide and gentle as it is, houseboating it alone has a definite appeal and the bordering city of Fort Myers has a terrific nature center, as well as plenty of golf courses.
How difficult is driving a houseboat?
Driving a houseboat is different than driving a car, but is not that difficult. The marina staff will walk you through driving the boat when you pick it up. Most people get the hang of maneuvering the boat within a few minutes.
How do I check availability or reserve a houseboat?
Give us a call at 888-454-8825, and one of our reservation agents will be happy to check availability for you. It's helpful if you already have an idea of when you want to go and what boat you're most interested in when you call.
Alternatively, you can contact us online with your availability request, and one of our agents will be happy to get back to you with the information you need.
How early do I need to reserve?
Earlier is better. If you're planning a trip during a holiday weekend like Memorial Day, it's best to get a reservation six months or more in advance. Mid-week trips or off-season dates are often available as little as a few weeks beforehand.
What kind of fish are found in the gulf?
A trip to the Sanibel and Captiva Islands is a fantastic opportunity to try some saltwater fishing. Grouper (red and black) is especially good in this part of the Gulf. Some of the (many) other fish that you'll have a chance at catching in the open water include tripletail, king mackerel, barracuda, snapper, cobia and even shark.
Is there camping along the shore?
Camping on the islands is certainly available, if you'll find resorts and hotels more common accomodations.
