What is there to do at Lake of the Woods?
Few lakes anywhere can match the Lake of the Woods for size. A houseboat could be occupied for years exploring island after island and mile after mile of shoreline. You can step off onto the shore and be completely alone, save for the wildcats and beavers - or one of the hundreds of bald eagles in the immediate area. On the water, beyond houseboating, you may want to try a sailboat against the gentle winds of the lake. Motorboating and water-skiing on this almost unthinkably large expanse of water is an awe-inspiring experience and the fishing is nothing short of legendary.
How difficult is driving a houseboat?
Driving a houseboat is different than driving a car, but is not that difficult. The marina staff will walk you through driving the boat when you pick it up. Most people get the hang of maneuvering the boat within a few minutes.
How do I check availability or reserve a houseboat?
Give us a call at 888-454-8825, and one of our reservation agents will be happy to check availability for you. It's helpful if you already have an idea of when you want to go and what boat you're most interested in when you call.
Alternatively, you can contact us online with your availability request, and one of our agents will be happy to get back to you with the information you need.
How early do I need to reserve?
Earlier is better. If you're planning a trip during a holiday weekend like Memorial Day, it's best to get a reservation six months or more in advance. Mid-week trips or off-season dates are often available as little as a few weeks beforehand.
What kind of fish are found in the lake?
Lake of the Woods has been called the "Walleye Capital of the World" and it's certainly true that walleye get to trophy-style hugeness within these waters, especially near the south shore. Northern pike also grow to record size in the southern end of the lake - and sauger are plentiful. The northwest stretch of the lake also has an intense amount of healthy walleye, as well as muskie, but also is home to smallmouth bass, northern pike and crappie.
Is there camping along the lake shore?
Resorts and marinas are everywhere, along the lakeshore and on some of the larger islands. State parks have plenty of campsites and there are state sanctioned campsites beyond that. Backcountry, primitive camping is also allowed.
