In 1941, the creation of the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River also created Lake Roosevelt and its many miles of shoreline and even more miles of open water. Lake Roosevelt, located in the state of Washington, is a long, narrow lake that stretches 150 miles toward Canada, but rarely spans wider than a mile. For that reason, navigating between its shores at times can resemble navigating a vast, leisurely river.

Boating certainly is the best way to experience the lake, whether you're cruising above the water on a houseboat or getting a closer look from a canoe or personal watercraft. Don't forget to take a map, this is no flat lake where you can see one end from the other and you'll want to explore everything. Every turn in the lake is surprising, and the southern lake's dry steppe terrain contrasts beautifully with the northern lake's fir and pine forests.

Hundreds of species of birds and animals live in the lake. Keep an eye out for moose in particular along the banks, and Walleye are plentiful if you're looking to fish off the back of your houseboat. With as wild, lush and extensive as Lake Roosevelt is, every boating experience will be different.
