Virginia's Smith Mountain Lake spreads clear-watered and large in a valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains. With 32 square miles of water surface and more than 500 miles of shoreline, it is a lake of many inlets, shaded with thick foliage. Part of this foliage shades a fantastic beach that stretches along Smith Mountain Lake State Park.

The wide surface of the lake and its many inlets on the shore make this a lake perfect for exploration, whether you're cruising along on a houseboat or zipping around on a personal watercraft. Water-skiing and wakeboarding on the open water also are common activities — how could they not be, with all that space?

A houseboating excursion naturally will be slower paced, but the diverse coast makes the trip extremely rewarding. If fishing off the back of houseboat appeals to you, Smith Mountain Lake is a great lake for Striped Bass.
