Houseboating in the North East
Up next in our regional series is the north east! But instead of lakes or rivers, we're diving into why you might want to houseboat on a canalway. From the Erie Canal in upstate New York or up to Ontario on the Trent-Severn Waterway or Rideau Canal. See what will put all of them on the map for you below:
Erie Canal
Where Is It: The Erie Canal is in upstate New York, you'll depart from Erie Canal Adventures in Macedon, just southeast of Rochester -- SEE MAP --
Why You Should Visit: The Erie Canal is known as one of the United States' greatest feats in engineering. Stone locks, lift bridges and guard gates used in the 1800's are still used to operate the canal today. The Canal is full of history, architecture, and hundreds of miles of scenic waterway with charming canal towns and trails for exploring.
Best Time to Go: Houseboat season runs from May through mid-October -- SEE WEATHER --
Good to Know: The houseboats can travel as far west as Tonawanda, or as far east as Oswego. Either would take a full week there and back.

Trent-Severn Waterway
Where Is It: TheTrent-Severn Waterway and Kawartha Lakes in central Ontario sits about an hour west of Kingston. There are two houseboat bases to start your journey: Horseshoe Bay near Peterborough, and H20 Getaways near Trenton-- SEE MAP --
Why You Should Visit: Houseboating on the Trent-Severn allows you to combine natural wonders along with rich history and entineering marvels. Stop at picturesque towns and vibrant cities along the way, and take in the natural beauty of the Canadian countryside in between.

Good to Know: Peterborough is about the halfway point of the navigable waters for houseboats. You can travel as far west as Kirkfield, and as far east as Trenton (or to Peterborough from H20 Getaways in Trenton); it would take about 2 weeks to travel round trip either way.
