Boredom Busters!

"I'm booooored!!!!"  2 cringe-worthy words that no one wants to hear on a vacation, whether it's from your child or your travel companions.

Lots of people ask us "Will I be bored on the water for several days with nothing to do?" My answer is always that houseboating is a "choose your own adventure" kind of experience and you can make it as busy or as lazy as you want.

A while back we did a blog post about adding extra watercraft to make your trip more exciting.  Well, what if you don't want to add on a powerboat or personal watercraft.  What then?  Very few of our lakes are developed, meaning they do not have shops or restaurants to go to.  Because of this you have the opportunity to create your own kind of fun!

Here are some tried and true suggestions that I use on my own personal houseboat trips.

Bring your pool noodles or other toys and lazily float behind the houseboat.  On my houseboat trips to Lake Mead we've been known to spend several hours a day doing this.  The guys (and a few brave gals) show off like monkeys, zipping  head first down the slide or jumping off the top of the houseboat, while us ladies cheer them on, paddling away on our noodles to avoid the big splashes!

Watch a movie.  If you are in a place like Lake Powell that has large rock cliffs, set a projector up on the top deck of the houseboat and watch it on the rock wall.  Don't forget your surround sound speakers!  Thor's hammer is twice as loud bouncing off the canyon walls as it is in the movie theater.  Or at Lake Shasta, watch a movie on the satellite tv….from the hot tub!  I am Legend is extra scary out-doors!  Or hang a white sheet on your sliding glass door and transform your living room in to a home theater for World War Z.  (Hmmm….I'm sensing a zombie theme here…)

Go on a scavenger hunt.  Make a list of things that you'd only find in nature.  Old tree branch?  Check!  Large carp?  Check!  Washed up treasure? Double check!  Be creative and make it as hard or as easy as you'd like.

Play games.  Night time comes early on houseboat trips.  Set up a game of speed Uno or a Rummikub match.  Use M&Ms or Oreos as poker chips.  Hide and go seek on a dark beach can be quite a thrill!  Play a rousing game of charades or Catch Phrase by the camp fire.

What kind of things do you like to do on your houseboat trips to keep boredom at bay?
